Dan Pitt’s Opinionated Compendium of Downtown Palo Alto Restaurants
I have finally figured out Zola. It's got "seasonal French cooking" (mostly) and a predominance of French wines on the (not-very-large) wine list but there is nothing else French about it. The servers (even if friendly) know nothing about French service (even bistro-level) or wine at all, the music runs from "Have I heard that before?" to God-awful (why 1980s disco?), and nothing about the interior says "France" in any language. The wine prices are quite high by both the bottle and glass (mostly $14-18), the only bargain being the $10 corkage (normally $25) for wines at least ten years old. And I swear, if one more service staff says "You still workin' on that?" instead of "May I?" I will shove my plate (finished or not) in the manager's face. Who trains these people?

Zola? French? I don’t think so
