Spot Pizza at 115 Hamilton has closed, which is too bad as it served the best pizza by the slice downtown. The restaurant is being significantly remodeled and will reopen as a specialty tea-cocktail place called Teaquation & Tonic. Teaquation has one location in Redwood City and the big question is whether Teaquation & Tonic serves food.
Over on the block of Bryant between University and Hamilton that has the greatest concentration of restaurants on Bryant, look for Ramen Nagi to open at 541 Bryant. This is the location that has been empty for a long time, having housed Nouveau Trattoria followed by Trattoria Romana and Zucca. Ramen Nagi is a well-regarded Fukuoka-and Tokyo-originated chain that has expanded to 50 locations in Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. This will be their first U.S. venture, followed shortly by another location at Valley Fair. The flagship location in Tokyo is in Shinjuku, supposedly a neighborhood and train station but in my experience a maze the size of a small country. Ramen Nagi offers four different broths, all pork-based.
Update: They sometimes have a vegetarian option, with a potato-based broth, but in limited supply (like 20 bowls per day).
