Francis Ford Coppola’s Cafe Rosso e Bianco is dark, shuttered, and gone. Formerly called Cafe Niebaum-Coppola, this bistro/wine bar/store had undergone a bit of a restoration last year and installed an expensive self-serve wine-bar dispensing system. I had mixed feelings about the place. I liked its looks and think it added to the buzz on the street. But the service was inconsistent (or consistently bad) and the last time I ate there it was impossibly loud inside and we had to move to the sidewalk. Food was fair though the menu lacked identity. I don’t think Mr. Coppola gave the place enough personal attention to bring the quality up to what it should have been, though I don’t know if low volume caused its demise. I only hope we don’t get a chain anything in its place.
