Zao Noodle Bar no longer provides the zen of noodle slurping on University Avenue, or at any other of its locations. It went out of business entirely last month. It seemed like a good fit for the times: healthy, warm, inexpensive, slightly ethnic food.
But look what slipped in, practically across the street: the bebécakes cupcakery (lower case and haphazard accents theirs). Snuck into Paperwhirl, the stationery and paper-goods shop at 230 University Avenue, bebécakes offers sweet treats in their display case that remind you that you should have learned from your mother how to make these things instead of buying them for several dollars apiece. There is no seating, just eating. Also lots of catering.
And finally, Gravity Wine Bar has outfitted the former Melt space at 544 Emerson between University and Hamilton, next to Scotty’s Bar. Wine is offered by the bottle, carafe, or glass but nothing smaller. It’s a fairly extensive selection by the bottle with six sparkling, nine white, and eight reds by the glass and carafe. The list reflects the peculiarities of the owner, one example being that the only Argentine reds are two pinot noirs, of all things. (Rumor has it that the owner does not like malbec.) Food concentrates on appetizers with special emphasis on charcuterie though there are roughly half a dozen mains, rather French bistro-like.

Zao bow out but bebécakes opens and Gravity Wine Bar rises
