Let’s start with the deceased. Zadna Bowl, the Jordanian casual restaurant on Emerson next to Rangoon Ruby, has closed. They always lacked visibility, with just a temporary sign that was in any case hidden somewhat by the adjacent parklet. Nice folks; I feel bad for them.
Lima Ruby also succumbed to what were undoubtedly high rents on University Avenue, especially for a double-wide space. Before the pandemic the restaurant was Burma Ruby, a sister restaurant of Rangoon Ruby on Emerson, with an identical menu but a younger ambiance (which I did not prefer). The transition in 2022 to a Peruvian menu was interesting but an odd match for a Burmese heritage.
Meanwhile, Georgian restaurant Bevri moved from Bryant to 335 University, where La Strada had been. This is an ambitious move for Bevri as the rent is undoubtedly higher on University than on even Bryant, which, frankly, I think is wider, brighter, and more pleasant for pedestrians.
Finally, we have not only a new restaurant but also a new cuisine. Poké One has opened at 407 Lytton (formerly home to Thai and French restaurants) at Waverley. Although poké is the first thing on the menu there are also a lot of Japanese items (and not just sushi). A soft opening is happening now.
